Shirodhara is an Ancient 60 minute Ayurvedic healing practice which has been performed in India for over 4,000 years, a blend of therapeutic oils are warmed in a traditional copper pot suspended above the client’s head, and with their eyes covered, they will experience the warm oil flowing over their 3rd eye and Marma points into their scalp and hair, accompanied by ayurvedic pranayama breathing practices, face, scalp, neck and shoulder Marma point massage.
Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word usually translated as ‘the science of life’, it says though the structural body is made up of five elements of ether, air, fire, water and earth, the functional aspects are governed by three doshas of vata (ether & air), pitta (fire and water), and kapha (water and earth). Restoring the doshas encourages a healthy mind-body system, the Doshas are bodily energies which influence all living matter and mental energies and the Doshas are present in every cell.
Marma’s are pressure or energy points in the Ayurvedic system of massage, meeting at the special junctures of : sira (vessels); mansa (muscles); snayu (ligaments); asthi (bones) and sandhi (joints). Marma points activated during Shirodhara which are the main characteristics of Dosha are: Brahma Marma: (PITTA), Adhipati Murdhi: (VATA), Shiva Marma: (KAPHA), Sthapani Marma: (THIRD EYE), balancing the Chakras, a sanskirt meaning: wheel or disc. Chakras contain Nadas, a fine network of fourteen subtle nerves that run from the Chakra’s to various points in the body. Pranic and psychic energy is absorbed through these subtle nerves, and energise our physiological systems. The door to the Nadis is through the mind; breathing (pranayama) and through the Marmas.
